This year, I am piloting the use of literature circles in my classroom. During these literature circles, students are receiving explicit reading instruction that focuses on vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. These literature circles also allow my students to be immersed in authentic text and engage in student-directed book club discussions on a daily basis. Already, I have seen my students become more excited and engaged during reading instruction. To continue this effective instruction, I need to provide my students with additional class sets of chapter books. The chapter books on this list, including Encyclopedia Brown and My Weird School #1, have been chosen strategically to address the needs and interests of my students. Students will be reading the books independently and then have a debrief meeting to discuss and reflect on what they have read.
