Colored filters that cover harsh fluorescent lighting have been shown to create a calm and conducive learning environment. Colors such as green and blue tend to encourage a soothing and relaxing setting making it easier to stay focused. Children spend the majority of their day under fluorescent lighting which leads to eyestrain, headaches, and makes focusing difficult. Most of my students have attention and sensory disorders; therefore, they perceive things differently and harsh lighting does not help at all! These filters are a simple way to integrate soothing colors into our classroom. They are also easy to remove if the need arises.
