Our 5th-grade curriculum includes 20 minutes of daily independent reading time. Several of my students are not (yet) able to read the grade-level books that are in the current classroom library because they are working on their basic decoding/fluency skills. They need specialized materials to be fully included during independent reading time. My students love graphic novels, and these types of books can be enormously helpful in improving reading skills. Since my students are emergent readers they need visual supports to help them figure out the written words. Graphic novels have rich plot structures and reading these types of books will help my students increase their comprehension skills including identifying the main idea, sequencing events, and understanding character and setting.
