Geometry is a difficult subject for many of my students. In fourth grade, we spend a lot of time learning about angles! This is often the first time my students are exposed to angles, thus making it a challenging part. We explore angles by themselves, within shapes, and those found in the real world. Not all children learn the same way, so why should they all have to learn about angles using one type of protractor? By providing the students with a variety of protractors, some allowing the students to physically move part of it, they can see what an angle represents, not just seeing a set of lines on a page. As students become more confident with these protractors, they gain confidence in math. 35 protractors of each type would allow each of my students to explore each type of protractor and choose the tool(s) that make the most sense to them.
