The students in my class are not in orchestra, band or chorus. They were assigned to a traditional general music class. I needed to find a way to engage and challenge them with very little skills. I decided to use technology to help them create their own musical compositions, soundtracks to original stories and musical documentaries. The students need quality microphones to record their narration of original stories to soundtracks they created, to read biographies of famous artists they researched and sing or rap lyrics they wrote to accompany songs they have written. The ability to create music using music technology has many benefits: Math-patterns, sequences and numbers, Literacy-sentence structure, speaking and listening skills, story telling, writing, poetry (lyrics), form, Science-exploration, discovery, problem solving, cause and effect, Fine motor skills-keyboard, drums, editing but most of all creative development. The ability to create something that is all their own.
