Every day, my students navigate through a minefield of obstacles in the pursuit of knowledge. Some literally trudge through broken glass on the sidewalk, while others struggle to lift themselves out of heartbreaking home lives. Reading is often their sanctuary, their inspiration and their way out. I teach English to grades nine through eleven, and though my students are high achieving, our school is severely underfunded. The vast majority of our students live below the poverty line. Many of my students carry the weight of tremendous responsibility at home from helping to raise younger siblings to contributing to family income. Despite so many obstacles, my students love to read. Some travel upwards of an hour by public transportation each day to attend our public, magnet school, and the time spent within our walls moves them closer to ever expanding horizons and the potential for greatness in every child.
