My students are all high poverty, African American teenagers that arrive with pride every morning to a school that was completely destroyed by a hurricane a few years ago. While others would look upon our school - a network of modular FEMA trailers -as a wasteland, they see it as a beacon of hope, the place they come to turn their dreams into reality. Unfortunately, our school does not have the resources to provide everything the children need for academic success. As a result, my students - some of the most under resourced in the country - are often expected to make sacrifices and go without. I am afraid my school's lack of resources may hinder the reality of my students' dreams without outside support to provide basic resources necessary for their academic success.
