The literacy level for my students is very low- in many cases 2-3 levels lower than their grade level. These students are English learners, many of whom do not have reading modeled for them at home.There are 31 students in our class- that's an exceptionally high number especially with no aide. I have been working overtime this year trying to create a reading culture in my classroom. We set aside a half hour daily to silent read and then write about what we read, and we visit our library once a week. I would like to create a warm and inviting area in our classroom where the students could cozy up to a book and learn the pleasure of reading. Fortunately, we have the books- just not a conducive, comfortable space. Your donation would help create a happy space for these students and show them that they are safe and cared for- something many of them don't feel at home or in the world.
