Our elementary school is a Title I school in the center of Sacramento and amidst several apartment buildings. Our students want to help make the school a hub of the community, and I think that starting a recycling center across grade levels and composting for a garden that we are starting to beautify the school grounds will help give students a sense of accomplishment and belonging. This will, in turn, cut down on some of the anti-social behaviors present on our school grounds. With our school's economic demographics, students often don't see a garden grow during these formative years. With recycling paper, bottles and cans, students can feel connected to the community and the Earth. Empathy and belonging is sorely needed by the kids at our school. If we have success, we would love to go to other schools in our district and share our learning experiences with them, too.
