A significant number of students struggle with math - not because of ability, but because of past negative experiences with math that cause fear, doubt, insecurity, and anxiety. In order to help students develop as mathematicians, it is first important to help them overcome negative messages and past experiences and develop new positive experiences with math. Math-based board and card games are a fun way for students to practice math, reasoning, and problem solving skills in a way that is fun and rewarding, naturally motivating, and takes the stress, doubt, and anxiety out of the mix. As a bonus, it also helps students develop cooperation and communication skills. Research shows that practicing math fluency through games vs. rote memorization is more effective than traditional memorization methods, and also helps students develop positive mindsets towards their mathematical abilities. Please help me stock my classroom with a variety of engaging math-based games so I can help my struggling students succeed!
