Ceramics class allows a unique opportunity within school for students who may be more "hands-on" to succeed. A co-worker who works with special needs students said, "I have some students who have a large deficit between written expression and oral expression; Ceramics is a better fit for them cognitively than Art 1. They are more successful in ceramics..." "Having a place where students like mine can express creativity is really important for them, their mental health and their self esteem." Scientific studies show a mental health boost from working in soil/clay due to beneficial microbes. My students need this opportunity.
