I have always encouraged individuality and creativity in my classes. With flexible seating, I can give my students some small choices that will allow them to make big decisions later on. I want my students to be able to put base needs aside in order to concentrate on rigorous, thought-provoking work. I want my classroom to be a place where the students don't want to leave. I want them to give me their best effort by being comfortable and flexible. We do many activities that require group work and movement. By incorporating these different seating options, the kids can more freely move about the room and work cooperatively with ease. I have students with varied needs. I had an exercise ball chair donated to me last year and the kids couldn't wait to be the first one to sit on it. Being able to move while they work cuts down on requests for restroom passes and students wandering the room in order to refocus themselves. The dining table and the tavern table and stools not only add variety and choice in seating, but they also create spaces for my students to work on larger projects in cooperative groups. As a former student with attention difficulties, I know that these seating opportunities will create an environment where kids can learn on their own terms.
