Having a flexible classroom seating option allows for students to feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. In many cases, my students don't control their home life and this option makes them feel safe to explore. Kayla Delzer, is the author of the popular 2015 EdSurge story, “Why the 21st-Century Classroom May Remind You of Starbucks.” In a 2016 follow-up story on Edutopia, she says giving students choices about their physical classroom space teaches them higher-order thinking skills. Higher order thinking is what is needed in the classroom to ensure a complete understanding of the learning objectives. We would use the tables for " business meeting" held about projects and group assignments. In today's business world meeting are held less and less in the office or boardroom, but at a dinner table, a golf course, or social events. One of the rules of my classroom is that we treat each other like a loving family, by supporting each other's endeavors and speaking words of encouragement to one another. All this is achieved because we build a comfortable environment where everyone feels safe, this is where the lounge floor chairs come in place. Giving each student an option of finding which location in the class works best for their learning and makes them the most comfortable.
