Having a book in their hand will increase reading at the school. The students will read the book and take a quiz on all books read. Students with an 85% on all books read will receive treats and special activities. Reading is a skill and, as with every skill, it requires not just instruction but practice. Reading practice serves a number of purposes. It enables students to apply the skills and strategies that are taught to them. Reading draws students into the world of "real" reading-a world in which people learn from and enjoy books. These books will make practice fun for students by facilitating successful encounters with text that the students themselves selected.
