Often, my students leave trauma at home and the classroom is the happiest place for them. We need the most basic of supplies. But rather than just give these out to students, I encourage them to earn their supplies. The students are awarded blue tickets daily for all of their academic participation and for good behavior. As their parents often can not provide them with adequate materials such as pencils, scissors, or erasers, they use these tickets like money in our class. 5 blue tickets will buy them a pair of scissors or a glue stick. A typical student earns 10-15 tickets a week. This makes a difference in their lives because they are learning responsibility and money management skills. They love shopping at our class store. It makes them feel very grown up and like they can take care of their needs. This is a valuable life skill for our community. The flip charts and markers are important because we use them daily to help the students visualize and retain the concepts they are learning. We sit together at carpet time to create visual aides about whatever subject we are learning. We post the anchor charts on our walls when we can, but they are expensive. Making anchor charts is a best practice that is encouraged by our district, but our class can only afford them with the help of generous donors. This will be a very useful learning tool to help our Rainbows Shine!
