Flexible Classrooms empower students to be active and engaged as they learn. Students have voice and choice in how they learn best; standing, sitting or moving. My goal is to maximize learning opportunities for my Kindergarten students by creating personalized spaces using flexible seating. Research shows flexible seating encourages cooperation, improvement in performance, happier students, collaboration and engaged learning. A student-centered approach with flexible seating will foster a level of comfort that leads to higher student achievement. Within my classroom there are many different types of students. Some enjoy sitting, while others prefer to stand. There are even a group of students who move from place to place during the same activity. The requested ball chairs will help students with posture and spinal alignment while enabling them to "wiggle while they work." Students will have an opportunity to use them during station rotations. The lap desk will provide alternatives to working at a desk and its portability allows them to choose an optimal spot that best fits their learning style. The funding of this project would allow me to transform my classroom into a space that meets the needs of all learners. Students would have voice and choice in selecting a seating option that is most conducive to their academic success.
