We have over 75% low-income students. About 96% of our students are minorities. Some parents struggle to meet basic needs, much less be involved in the classroom. Many students come from the surrounding neighborhood and have experienced things that fourth graders never should. I find it extremely challenging to make education seem important to students that are just trying to get by. In a 2009 student survey at our school, only 36% of the students said, "My teachers make school work interesting." Technology is one of the few things that excites these students. They respond to the hands-on and novel use of technology. Other students have very creative personalities and become restless with traditional teaching methods. Students with auditory, visual or kinesthetic learning styles benefit from engaging multimedia lessons that correlate with their strengths.
