As a result of their exceptionalities, my students struggle with sensory issues that make them more anxious, more over-stimulated, and more likely to have meltdowns. They find it more difficult than other students to stay focused, remain calm, transition from activity to activity, and calm down from meltdowns. Research shows that weighted items such as blankets, lap bands, and weighted stuffed animals reduce anxiety and promote focus in students with special needs. Weighted blankets provide gentle, deep pressure for students with sensory-integration issues. Weighted animals provide students with calming deep pressure that reminds them to stay seated and calm. They also serve as a transition tool and fidget. Weighted lap bands are great to use at a desk to help students stay calm, stay seated, and stay focused. I need more weighted items to help all of the students on my caseload to feel calm and focused at school.
