Through the use of literature, children can read about and discuss issues of diversity and acceptance. These books can lead to deep discussions around the topic of building empathy. Students need quality literature, written at their reading and interest level, that support character development. These books will provide that for my students. The books that I have selected for the class are about children from a variety of backgrounds with different life experiences. Recognizing differences and accepting people for who they are helps us grow as readers and as human beings. When we can "put ourselves into others' shoes" we are building empathy- a quality that carries with us throughout our lives.
