This school is an urban, public high school where the students audition in, in one of 8 majors. I teach chemistry, physics, and marine science to students from all disciplines. Our students span the socio-economic possibilities from homeless to well-off and reflect the ethnic make-up of our city. They are all passionate about their arts, putting in 3 hours a day in rehearsals and classes on average. Surprisingly, our school focused on the arts turns out a large number of scientists. Roughly 30% of our grads go on in a science in one way or another, and we have professional astronomers, experimental physicists, doctors, biotech professionals, chemical engineers, marine biologists, and more among our alums.
