My students often do not know how to calm down from a state of intense agitation. They are working on learning important emotional self-regulation skills and greatly benefit from items that they can touch and explore as they are trying to calm their bodies and minds. My students often get very overwhelmed and frustrated in a general education classroom setting. Keeping up with the demands of academics and using appropriate social skills can be extremely difficult. Frequent breaks from the classroom gives them an opportunity to regroup and refocus. I want to give my students the tools they need to manage their emotions such that they are able to focus on their academics and be successful alongside their typical peers. Not only do they need regular breaks, but they also need something to do during these breaks to help them regroup and prepare to return to their classroom. Having items such as stress balls or sensory toys to use during a break is a great way for them to calm down and prevent negative behaviors from occurring or escalating. I want to be able to provide individual kits of calming items that the students can use when they need a break from their general education classrooms. I hope to provide many different items so students can change the content of their kits periodically. This will give them the opportunity to learn what works the best for them. Having a large variety of things along with a caddy for each student means less need for constant cleaning and sanitation as they will not need to share items.
