My students will use the catapults in their unit on quadratic functions. This is a new topic for freshman and abstract for them. I try to give them a hands on project each unit to discover how the math is being used. My students will use the catapults to measure the time and distance that they launch on average. When we will then take that information to create a quadratic equation to make a predication. The students will then change the height of their catapult (by putting in on table), to predict where their candy will land. Giving students the opportunity to observe a parabola (quadratic) being created and how to figure out the equations we use in class will give them a deeper understanding of the math. The goal of the project is to show students how all the parts of the parabola (vertex, y-intercept, a value) are related to one another in the equation. They will also be able to transform from vertex form to standard form of the equation and vice versa.
