By offering students a variety of books (topics, difficulty) students will be able to get hooked reading a book in French. By reading, they increase their knowledge of the language and their ability to use it correctly, leading them to proficiency. We read from 5 to 10 minutes every day in French and to be able to keep this program going, I need to supply my library with new and interesting books. Students choose a book they like and start reading, ask questions when they get stuck on a word they don't understand and continue reading until time is up. Some students will bookmark their book and make sure they're the first ones to get to it the following day. Literacy is a key component of success in any subject. I have seen changes in students' writing as they become more exposed to structures and words and start using them naturally. It's a beautiful thing to see.
