As a school, we implement a reading program called Balanced Literacy. This program is an individualized reading program that requires students to do a lot of independent reading in books on their just-right reading level. Balanced Literacy is all about creating a love for reading while also working on strategies taught in the mini lesson that day. Students are pulled throughout that 45 minutes of independent reading time to work in small groups. During this time students would have an opportunity to work with a slight stimulation of movement. As young learners we have extra energy that can be funneled in a more positive way. These Wobble Chairs would give students a chance to direct that energy into their learning. The requested items will help us create a focused and stimulating classroom environment that allows us to learn without distractions. We want a 21st century classroom that is beyond the old, stationary chairs that we currently have. You can probably envision the desks you use to sit in as a child. Not much has changed about the furniture but the curriculum has. If we are asking students (7 and 8 years old) to sit and learn in 45 minutes increments on a daily basis, shouldn't they at least be comfortable while they do it? This project will help us improve the vision of what learning looks like. It doesn't always have to be a plastic chair with a wooden desk.
