The world around us is changing constantly, and I believe classrooms need to catch up a bit. There are a number of classrooms that look the same as when I was in elementary school and I am trying to change and improve the learning environment. Staying in the same seat for 8 hours is boring and uncomfortable as an adult, and I don’t want that for my students. Wobble Chairs and Bouncy Bands are a great start in the right direction for my classroom. Studies have shown that flexible seating increases motivation and engagement in the classroom. I am not surprised that when students are physically active during class they have been known to perform higher academically and behave in a better manor. To some being able to move around in a chair or bounce their legs during instruction can seem distracting at first, but I have experienced in my co-workers classroom that it actually helps students maintain their focus on the task at hand.
