In my classroom, one of my main goals is to create a learning community, so that we can all work together and help one another succeed. I would like a rug to help my students feel more "at home" and comfortable in their school environment, so that they will stay engaged in learning.
I am working on making the physical environment of my classroom better suited for collaborative learning and conversation. A classroom rug will help my students meet together in groups more comfortably and keep their focus on the learning task. Currently, students will work for a short time on our hard tile floor or at a table, and then lose focus and look for a more comfortable space or position. My hope is that a rug will allow much more flexibility and comfort when grouping students, and help keep the conversation and learning going.
I also hope to make the area with the rug a central meeting point for our class discussions, greetings, and celebrations of learning. By designating a central area where we can all come together to have class discussions or celebrations, I hope to help knit our classroom community together and help us work together more effectively.
