Great literature is an essential part of everyone's education, but especially in the formative years of a student's life. Reading is everything. It is the foundation of all knowledge. It is the gateway through which imaginations soar, through which hopes and inspirations are first glimpsed, through which barriers are torn down and dreams and personal achievements may be ultimately realized. Most of my students have never traveled beyond the confines of their own community, and so having access to great books such as these I have requested, will not only enhance their reading skills immeasurably, but also open up a world to them they can, as of yet, only dream of. A solid selection of good books can change their lives forever. More specifically, the novels I hope to obtain for my students will not only enhance their reading skills overall but will also be utilized to advance their reading comprehension as well as their writing. These are the two areas in which they suffer most, especially when it comes to testing. Coming from a community in which illiteracy, drug abuse and incarceration are extremely high, my students are dangerously vulnerable to losing interest in school and going down the wrong path in life. But through literature I found that I can reach them in these middle school years. They love reading, and they are engaged, and they strive to achieve. But our supplies here are so limited. These kids are so bright and have so much potential; they just need the proper tools in place in order to succeed.
