Most of my students do not have a successful history with their mathematical learning. In fact, nearly all of them have either failed or repeated a math course at some point in their academic careers. By taking Mathematical Modeling they are not only reconstructing their attitudes about math but also re-establishing a positive attitude about themselves as proficient mathematical learners. In order to support their success, most activities in the course are based on personalized expression or learning through mathematical activities. For example, they will study periodic functions and all of the vocabulary involved (quadrant, intercept, maximum, period, etc) by creating a biorhythm graph to explore their lives in the future and past. We strive to make certain that the students can see themselves in their math learning. The Spot It project will allow students to experience the magic of spot it cards and then re-create a similar deck with icons that represent themselves. They may decorate their cards with family pictures, favorite colors, etc., but will be required to show the matrix of combinations that can create their cards. This project allows them to use a variety of mathematical models and equations to describe and justify their final product. I am very excited about this project and hope that it is funded because it will also allow students to interact with a card game that is lively and quick. The majority of my students do not participate in any type of play behaviors (team sports, organized clubs, sponsored extra-curriculars, etc) and therefore need experiences that encourage and support building community in the classroom. I believe that this project will allow students to increase their genuine interest in the mathematics behind the game and the people behind the cards they create.
