Breakout rooms have become popular ways to build teamwork for youth and adult groups. They are an exciting way to practice problem-solving and critical thinking, as well as a tool to help students figure out how to work with one another towards a common goal. While I cannot provide these rooms for the students in the classroom setting, the community of teachers at Breakout EDU have given me a way to "break into" kids' interest in learning with breakout boxes. Students who use breakout boxes to learn and review content are some of the most engaged learners I have ever seen! The scenarios created can be modified for all subject areas and shared throughout the school to reach all students. It provides a nontraditional approach to content learning for the kids who think they don't like certain subjects, and it is so much fun the students truly don't look at it as having to learn content. They work hard to solve the puzzles and open the locks, and there are many ways to present the content within this platform. Incorporating STEM strategies like building magnetic generators, using computer software, and mathematical calculations make for extremely hands-on learning experiences for the kinesthetic learners. I can share the kits with History and Language Arts teachers to study their content, and we can even use them as a cross-curricular learning experience. The request for multiple kits is to ensure 100% engagement in larger groups, as they can be split into smaller teams to solve the boxes. Please help me remind the students how much fun learning can be. I have tried another teacher's kit and my students ask every week if we are going to do it again... and they remember the concepts we covered with the first one weeks later!!
