The students of SCAS, an Alternative School, come from all seven districts in Spartanburg County. New students enter our school weekly and can depart our school at any given time. Based on this fluctuation in enrollment the percent of students receiving free or reduce lunch can range from 80 to 90 percent. Many of these students are living in non-traditional homes: single parent households, extended family households, foster homes, or group home settings. A large number of our students are not functioning on grade level. The majority of these students read at least two levels below their current grade. Even though these students have a great deal to overcome, if you can capture their interest and hold it, they are willing and even eager to learn.
