Student success and achievement is a constant struggle if a student is unable to read grade level material. Reading is the most fundamental, interwoven skill found in all content areas during a child's day. It is where learning begins, and if a student is reading at grade level, their chances of being on grade level in math and writing are highly likely.
Students have a sense of empowerment when they are able to read a book with little or no help, as well as a strong sense of pride when they understand what they read. Reading comprehension is powerful and higher levels of learning can occur if a child is able to comprehend what they read. We are trying many different strategies to help students succeed and Quick Reads is a great intervention to meet students at their level and to close the gap between them and their peers.
The students who are going to benefit from the Quick Reads intervention are students grades 2-6. This intervention can be used both individually and in small groups. It will allow them to gain word recognition and vocabulary skills, as well as allow them to improve in their fluency and comprehension. In addition, this program is able to achieve this while integrating the skills in the context of high interest passages based on science and social studies.
