My kindergarten and first grade students are entering the most important grades of their lives. In these grades students learn the foundation of their education, such as letters, sounds, blending sounds to make words, sight words, numbers and counting as well as very important social skills. Students are entering schools with limited skills due to different reasons but one is developmental delays. Students with developmental delays struggle to perform basic tasks, such as holding a pencil or a crayon or recalling letters and numbers he/she has learned.
Technology is the key to learning. I have used many programs/apps, with the limited technology I have access to, to engage my students in the learning process. For example, I have found so many of my kindergarteners struggle with holding a pencil to learn to write. A student with a developmental delay needs more instruction in the the flow of the lines and curves of the letters before they can be expected to hold a pencil. There are programs that can be used on a tablet that would allow a child to use their finger to trace those lines and curves. This multi-sensory approach to learning to write has proved beneficial for my students. This approach can be carried across the curriculum with numbers and sight words as well as other basic skills!
Technology is very engaging. Students have more of an incentive to complete tasks when they can use technology. My students have a difficult time staying on task and completing work more than the average student. Using technology opens the doors to not only engagement but endless opportunities to learn and practice skills.
