In our community, we have a high population of English Language Learners. A portion of each day is dedicated to designated ELD (English Language Development) instruction. I would like do a "novel study" with my ELD group because access to high-quality literature is crucial to language learning. I chose, Because of Winn Dixie, because it is an engaging and highly relatable story for this age group. For most students, this will be their first time reading a full novel. By providing each student with a copy of the novel, each child will be able to experience the story on a personal level as well as experience the empowerment that comes along with finishing a novel. During the "novel study" we will be covering many of the ELA Common Core Standards for 3rd grade as well as many of the ELD Standards. We will be practicing skills from reading comprehension, making inferences, and conventions of the English Language. I will also be incorporating creative writing and art into the unit.
