It was my first year teaching Photojournalism last year, and my students and I began the year with two DSLR Nikon cameras, one of which was broken. Luckily, our art teacher sold us her very nice DSLR Canon Rebel for $400.00, even though she had paid much more for it. Out of the two cameras students could use, the Canon was far superior, especially for action shots during sporting events, talent shows, and other activities. Fifteen students were enrolled in the class, which means that for every 7.5 students, there was one camera with which to learn. This was very inconvenient during lessons in which I wanted students to be able to come together in small groups to manipulate the camera settings as I taught. Additionally, two cameras were not enough when I assigned formal photography assignments in which students had to take quality photographs using different techniques, such as lighting, rule of thirds, portraits, etc. If a student forgot the camera she was using at home--which happened from time to time, it placed an additional strain on our resources. Students simply need more equipment in this class. It is not fair to students entering this class that they do not have the resources they need to learn and produce a quality yearbook. These students deserve high quality DSLR cameras that can capture amazing photographs.
