My kids love to read stories about kids that look like them and have similar experiences as them. However, the book Wonder will take it a step further and challenge my students to think about students who might be different and to consider the impact of how we treat others. Having a class set of Wonder will allow students to have the words in their own hands and experience empathy as they learn of the hardships of August Pullman, a young boy who looks very different and attends school for the first time. With this project, I will be able to provide a tangible book to each student as we read, and students will be able to record their thinking, their predictions, and new or unfamiliar vocabulary with the new dry erase markers, too! Our classroom community will be built stronger as all students will understand the importance of the phrase "Choose Kind."
