To best prepare my students for their future, I like to structure my class with half fiction and half non-fiction so students have access to and experience with a wide variety of texts. The books that I requested are some of my favorites for widening students' horizons about a variety of social issues. Albert Einstein was Jewish, German, an influential scientist, and lived through WWII, so we discuss the atomic bomb and Holocaust. With the novel about Mark Twain, we discuss how his views on slavery and racism change over time. In The Great Gilly Hopkins, we learn about how a foster child learns to accept love.
