My students will use the listening center to listen to books, songs and nursery rhymes. Research has shown that repetitive readings of books increase vocabulary. Listening to books will also provide a model of language for ESL students. My students will use the listening center and books on cd to enrich their reading experience which will in turn begin to close the gap in their vocabulary knowledge. Repetitive readings of books build literacy skills that are vital in Early Childhood. Research has shown that if a child doesn't read on grade level by second grade their chances of getting there are drastically reduced. A listening center will provide my students with the opportunity for repetitive readings of books and nursery rhymes that they will otherwise not get. It will allow for them to select books they want to hear and become familiar with these texts.
