My middle school students absolutely love reading. I have a 200 book personal classroom library I've acquired over the years, and the reactions on my students faces when they saw it were priceless! Never before had they seen a collection of books that appealed to their interests before. Here are a couple of reactions from my students when they first saw our classroom library: "I don't ever think I've read a book I liked before." "I've always wanted to read this!" "This is my favorite movie! I didn't know there was a book!" "Can I read that next?" These are the kind of statements that warm the cockles of my book-pushing heart. Of course, they've led to some more questions, such as: "Can we get the whole series?" "I looked it up online, and the author wrote another book, can we get it?" "Have we got the next book?" "When can we get the next book?" My book budget isn't big enough to accommodate the rate at which my students are devouring books! In addition, we have a wide range of readers, with a single class ranging from students who are just beginning to read to students reading on a high school level. All these readers deserve books that will interest, engage, and challenge them. Help us achieve our book hankering dreams and add more books to our classroom library (or replace volumes that have seen too much love.) Our school is very small, so we do not have a school library. Additionally, many students do not have access to public library services. So our classroom collection is their most reliable access to literature. Please help our library grow!
