How many times have you sat in a science class listening to someone lecturing instead of playing with animals, doing experiments, being taught with models, and other hands-on activities? My students are mostly immigrants, and therefore, would not really learn just with me talking at them. They need to experience science. This becomes difficult with district cuts and living in high poverty area. We do not have the budget nor collect enough science fees to buy animals and the necessary materials to keep them. This is why I am asking for your help! I have seen in the past that students enjoy handling animals, seeing them grow and develop. For this project, I am requesting different plants and animals that I can use while teaching to reinforce contents. For example, when teaching about the plant life cycles I can use live plants to show how they photosynthesize and oxygenize the atmosphere. When teaching about ecosystems we can use the worms, crickets, and spiders to show relationships between organisms as well as how energy gets transferred from one organism to the next (the spider eating the former organisms). When learning about cellular reproduction, we can use the mitosis and meiosis models to visually each stage. Also, when we learn about topics that are widely discussed such as evolution, students can see the various stages of evolution for humans by observing models of skulls. Students learn more from planting vegetables, feeding animals, and observing life cycles than from a power point. I want to give my students the experience of science, to learn by doing and examining, by analyzing and discussing. Thank you so much for making our project a reality!
