Background knowledge is essential for students to gain understanding from content. This knowledge is gained through life experiences, interaction with the world through technology, and incidental learning. As teachers we attempt to provide life experiences for our students, but we are limited. We depend on families to assist with this, but many times they are unable to provide these experiences due to their socioeconomic means. Types of technology that students use are numerous in this day and age: computers, smart phones, tablets, television, to name a few. Again, this depends on what the families are able to provide. Incidental learning is what students experience through their five senses, hearing being the primary determining factor in processing language. You hear so much more than what you see. The task of building their background knowledge has fallen to us. An interactive whiteboard is the best means in which to assist our students in gaining background knowledge of the world around them. For instance, a recent literary text that our fourth grade students were reading discussed the concept of blown glass. In order for them to understand what blown glass was, we showed them a blown glass horse. To further their understanding we pulled up a video on the computer that demonstrated someone blowing glass. They marveled at what they saw and asked many questions. This type of experience is vital for our students to succeed academically. That is why we are requesting financing for a Promethean Activboard with cart, the same technology that is used in other classrooms at our school. Any assistance with this project would be greatly appreciated by both our students and us. Thanks!
