I am a 5th and 6th grade ELL teacher at Rhodes Elementary. At our school 83% of the students are low income. The population is predominately Hispanic, Latinos making up 73% of our student body. I work heavily to ingrain reading and math strategies into our students learning everyday. My students struggle to read and comprehend grade level material while still trying to master the language. I try to build self-confidence in them so that they see being bilingual is an asset and not a setback. My students love Math and I try to tie in reading when ever I get a chance! My students love hands on activities with engaging examples especially when working on unfamiliar terms and situations such as math word problems. They are all very bright and hard working kiddos!
