My students are accustomed to learning in conditions with minimal supplies and materials. As a Public Charter school in a low income neighborhood, we do not get the kind of funding other school districts receive and my students are developing and growing up with a "make it work, with what you have" mentality. Needless to say, my kids love making music and make it work with whatever they can get their hands on. My kids have re-purposed trash into cymbals and kick drums, so putting real stringed instruments like the Ukulele in their hands will change their world as they explore music theory, performance, culture, and music appreciation with these real instruments. Research in Neuroscience has proven that the act of making music by physically playing an instrument stimulates every part of the brain simultaneously. Playing an instrument is essentially a full body workout for the brain. I want my students to have the opportunity to develop these essential neural pathways in a fun way by learning to play this wonderful instrument!
