My 4th graders are currently sitting in standard issue desks with flip tops. This means every time they need something- a pencil, workbook, folder, they need to clear off their desk completely so they can get inside. All of my students sit in the same hard, plastic chairs each day. It is not uncommon for them to sit on their knees in their chair or even stand throughout the day. This is not ideal for the varied learning styles in my room. I believe my students will benefit greatly from the addition of different learning spaces. Moving to tables with flexible seating options will allow my group the freedom they need to learn and engage without disrupting each other. Studies show that flexible seating can have many health benefits but can also increase motivation and engagement. With the help of generous donors, the six tables, 4 standing yoga balls and 4 yoga floor pillows will help maximize my students’ abilities to learn, grow and achieve each day. I see my students using these materials to collaborate with each other on a daily basis, own their learning space, and discover which seating options help them achieve their goals.
