Our primary goal is to provide books for children to read in additional languages. We have a very large population of children that speak languages other than English. We have a small section of non-English books in the library, but we want to expand the English as a Second Language (ESL) section to cover more types of books in other languages. Currently there are 25 different languages spoken in our families' homes. This grant will be used to purchase books in other languages. We have about 150-175 children that speak more than one language--over 27% of our children currently enrolled. This program can also benefit younger siblings that have not entered school yet. Older siblings can read to the younger children at home. Other family members may also benefit from books that are shared in the home. Some of our ESL families are just learning to read books that are in their own language and English. This is a continuing project and we hope to see reading improvements each year. Some of these books will have stories written in another language on one page and English on the opposite page. This will help children read in their own languages and learn to read in English. The children will be able to share these books at home and return them to the library when they are finished reading them. Our goal is for the families to share books at home and practice reading. We hope by providing books in many languages, our ESL children will develop a love for reading.
