When people hear "special ed" or "life skills" class, different ideas for what this looks like come to mind. For me, it looks like this: nine students, three girls, six boys, three kindergarteners, six first graders, Autism, Down Syndrome, Visual Impairment, Epilepsy, Intellectual Disabililty, Speech Impairment, and Nonverbal. We are learning to tolerate other individuals being near us. We are learning to stay in a certain area for five minutes to complete a task. We are learning to greet others. We are learning to say, "My name is..." We are learning that sometimes I don't get my way and that's okay. We are learning to how to let others know what we want/need. We are potty training. We are learning our letters and letter sounds. We are learning to write our name. We are learning to identify numbers and count. We are learning shapes and colors. Most importantly, we are learning to love ourselves and be who we are.
