COVID-19 has made on-site learning a challenge due to the fact that students cannot share resources. Teaching multiple classes does not allow enough time to quarantine books for sterilization. Because so much of what our students do is digital, I would like them to each have a hard copy of the book Refugee, by Alan Gratz, to read. They will be interacting with the text using Post-It notes. This aligns with our state standards of point of view, conflict, theme, central idea, and author's perspective and will tie into our argument writing unit. A novel that helps our youth understand the plight of refugees and immigrants hopefully will bring empathy and understanding by experiencing different perspectives.
