It didn't make sense to me- how could I teach? The problem was that I wasn't exactly sure what I needed! I became very resourceful and threw out any notion of being picky-beggars can't be choosers, right? I walked around the school, took what other teachers were throwing away, bought books from garage sales, sought donations from whoever offered- mainly my parents' supply closets!- and spent my first pay check on creating an environment that I wanted to teach in. Having left another career only two months earlier, the one thing I confidently knew I could provide my kids was a warm and colorful safe-haven where they would come to spend 8 hours a day with me. Our community is one of the poorest Congressional districts in the US, has over 1,100 children in grades 3-8. 100% of our children receive free lunch. My students need leveled books, a storage rack, a cd player for a listening center and other learning centers to enhance their educational experience. Please help me fill my class!
