This project will help me to promote effective literacy support with motivating, creative, and interactive take-home book bags. The research shows that reading aloud develops vocabulary and conceptual understandings, especially when adults also talk with children about what they are reading. Access to appropriate children's books is a problem for many families considering the cost and the difficulties of finding quality literature in a home language other than English. Carefully selected bilingual books, with the interests of my students in mind, will help to build and strengthen much needed home-school connection in a meaningful way. My students need access to beautifully illustrated children's literature to develop a lifelong admiration for reading. The families that are working hard to provide for their children need opportunities for conversations beyond day-to-day routines. These books will not only help the children to learn about the world in greater depth, but they will also promote the importance of bilingualism in our interconnected and diverse community.
