Individuals with disabilities are the most unemployed and underemployed group in the nation. Finding jobs for these individuals can be difficult as learning job skills takes an extended amount of time and willing employers must be found. These individuals are often highly motivated and excellent employees. They just lack the skills and experiences to gain employment.
My students need real life job experiences to help them learn valuable skills they will need in high school and beyond. If they start learning skills they can use in the future in junior high, they will be that much more prepared to be contributing members of society when they graduate high school.
I hope to set up janitorial/house keeping, cashier/store, delivery, and shredding opportunities. The color printer and laminating pouch will help us create visual supports for jobs and materials for information at our school store. The shredder will be used to shred documents gathered from other teachers in the school. The Lysol wipes, rags, window sill cleaners, and caddy will be used by students to clean classrooms and shared work spaces within the school. The tennis balls will be cut open and placed on the end of a stick in order to remove scuff marks from hallways. The mail cart will be used to sort and deliver incoming mail for teachers and to receive and organize outgoing mail or flyers. The pencil top erasers, pencils, and fidget spinners will be used to start a class store. The students will take turns working at the school store. They will get the chance to take money and count back change. All of these experiences will allow the students a chance to develop skills they could use in a workplace in the future.
