Thus far in the year, our classrooms have been filled with relationships and community as we transition to a restorative mindset in teaching and guiding students. Through trauma-informed practices, we seek to ensure that all students can grow to reach their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally. For some students, this means having a sketch pad they can use to draw or write poetry when they are having a particularly rough day. For others, reading books that touch upon immigration, civil rights, and LGBTQ topics make them feel more connected to the world around them. Some students simply need a handheld fidget to occupy their bodies while their minds are at work. This project includes various supplies for socioemotional development, stress reduction, and deescalation of student conflict. Art materials for specific projects, various fidget toys, and books that touch upon social justice ideas will fill the gap between academic strength and emotional growth for our students.
